Writing Workshops
**New workshops are being developed including workshops focused on poetry, word play, nature writing, mindfulness, and writing for change in our communities and beyond! We are happy to create opportunities based on special requests!
Stories by the Sea Summer Art, Story, and Nature Camp
We will combine storytelling, art and writing in a playful, safe environment in a fabulous old barn. We will share our work with the group and learn to give and receive constructive feedback. Poetry and prose will be explored with the focus on process and fun! Young writers will have the opportunity to create story stones, heart maps, story cubes, puppets, and more during the week and will have plenty of time to write and draw in nature as we'll walk across the street to Skofield Park each day. The week will culminate with a reading and performance for families!
Family Stories: Families Writing Together
This writing program will be an opportunity for families with children ages eight and up to attend a six-week session of writing workshops together to explore the themes of identity and place. Young writers and their family members will have a chance to share and write about individual, family and community identities. With hands-on activities incorporating artifacts, photographs, childhood neighborhood maps and letters, participants will record memories, share stories and create poems as a group and individually.
Creative Writing With Story Cubes
Children ages six and up will dream up characters and settings, create story cubes, and begin writing their very own stories. Imagination, creativity, fun, and the writing process will be the focus of this workshop. The youngest writers may choose to tell their stories to an adult who will record them.
Story Stones and Heart Maps
In this two-day workshop we will immerse ourselves in stories both from our own experience and from our imaginations. We will combine storytelling, movement, art and writing in a playful, safe environment. We will share our work with the group and learn to give and receive constructive feedback. Poetry and prose will be explored with the focus on process and fun!
Young Authors' Camp (Rockland Public Library site, one week camp)
The Southern Maine Writing Project’s Young Authors Camps provide young writers the opportunity to develop their skills by writing under the guidance of highly skilled teachers in a fun, relaxed environment.
Campers will:
Cows, Cows, Cows!
In this fun creative writing workshop we observe, muse and write about...COWS! :) We'll be led around Aldermere Farm by 4H students, listen to others' writings about bovines, and do some writing of our own! Recommended for children ages 7 and up!
The Animal in Me: Poetry Workshop
Is there an animal in you? Let's explore our inner animals and write poems about them!
Penguin Playtime
at Coastal Children's Museum, Rockland, ME
Children of all ages took part in penguin songs, movement, storytime and a drawing and writing activity!
The Write Time
We will create a space together where young writers work on their stories, poems, and other projects, try new writing activities, receive peer feedback, and have fun with other kids who love to write as much as they do!! Weather permitting we'll spend our time outside using our senses and soaking up the beautiful sights and sounds around us!
